How much of the sports internet is selling you parlays

The counting has started.

Every headline from every outlet we read is about to start getting logged. The first numbers go up after three weeks of counting.

How It’s Counted

  • What we read: each outlet’s main public news feed, every few minutes, around the clock. It’s the share of headlines in that feed, not of the outlet’s entire website.
  • What counts as betting content: promo and bonus codes, odds-and-picks pieces, betting advice (best bets, props, parlays) and sportsbook promotions.
  • What doesn’t: news about gambling. A story on a betting scandal or a league’s sportsbook deal is journalism, not a sales pitch. “How to watch” pages and fantasy filler are thrown off our front page too, but they don’t count here.
  • Fair play: an outlet needs at least 50 headlines in the window to get a number, every counted headline is listed in the receipts, and each headline is counted once no matter how many times it shows up.
  • We’re not anti-gambling. Put twenty bucks on the Super Bowl. We just don’t think a sports page should be a sportsbook ad.
